The 2004 UEFA Super Cup was played on August 27, 2004 between FC Porto of Portugalmarker and Valencia CF of Spainmarker. Valencia gained entry by beating Marseille in the 2004 UEFA Cup Final. Porto had made it to the final after beating AS Monaco in the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final. However both managers who won the respective titles had moved on. Jose Mourinho was now Chelsea manager, taking many of his Porto staff with him; and Rafa Benetiz had been appointed Liverpool manager (though the pair would later meet in the League Cup final in February 2005). Valencia won the match 2–1.
