The 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification will see various countries take part to determine 10 spots to the final tournament in Qatarmarker under the new qualification system set by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

In addition, six teams qualify automatically for the finals, and will not take part in the qualifiers:

Seedings

On December 6, 2007 the Asian Football Confederation announced the seeding for the preliminary round of the 2011 tournament:
Automatic Qualifiers Other Teams
        1. **
        2. *
        3. *
        4. *

Teams marked '*' withdrew prior to the draw.Teams marked '**' qualified on account of winning the AFC Challenge Cup.

        System

The first round of qualifying matches reduced the number of non-automatic qualifiers to 20. Following the withdrawals of North Korea, Myanmar and Turkmenistan, only one match was required.

The winner of the playoff advanced to round two, where it was joined by the 19 teams seeded 4th to 22nd. These 20 teams were split into five groups of four.

The top two in each group will go through to the 2011 tournament where they will join the automatic qualifiers -- Qatar, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, India and the winner (or runner-up) of the 2010 AFC Challenge Cup.

The first tiebreaker between teams tied on points is based on head to head records unlike the FIFA World Cup where the first tiebreaker is based on goal differences.

        First round

In the first round of the 2011 AFC Asian Cup qualification, the two lowest ranked AFC teams, Lebanon and Maldives, played home-and-away matches on April 9 and April 23, 2008.

Lebanon won both games with an aggregate score of 6–1 and advanced to the second round, where it will join the 19 teams seeded 4-22.
