Anand Kumar, a noted mathematics teacher and columnist for various national and international mathematical journals and magazines, was not able to pursue higher studies in the Cambridge University due to lack of money and premature death of his father, who was a low-paid employee in the postal department. His mother made papad, which Anand used to sell to fund his education. Yet, his passion for Mathematics did not diminish. As years rolled by, he grew into a ‘maths wizard’.Now, Anand is known all over the country for his innovative Super 30 programme, under which he tutors and provides books, board and lodging for eight months to 30 poor but bright students. He prepares them to crack the Joint Entrance Examination for the Indian Institutes of Technology, deemed one of the toughest entrance examinations in the world, tougher than getting into Harvard. It has been a privilege to have known this extraordinary young man. Discovery Channel has done an hour-long programme on his project. The New York Times has devoted half a page on him. Famous actress and ex-miss Japan Norika Fujiwara visited Patnamarker to make a documentary on Anand’s initiatives. He has figured in programmes on the BBC and has shared his experience from the IIM, Ahmedabad, to California . Recently, Anand Kumar got his name included in the Limca Book of World Records for his amazing teaching capability. As he had seen raw poverty, he got self-inspired and self-motivated to take the initiative to start Super-30 in 2003 to coach-30 economically weak students for IIT-JEE. During early days, his mother Jayanti Devi cooked for students. His brother Pranav Kumar takes care of the management. In the last seven years, 182 students out of 210 have made it to different IITs of the country. One thing common to most is their poor background. It is reflected in the group, which comprises wards of brick kiln worker, rickshaw puller, landless farmer, roadside vendor and the likes. Anand Kumar has received many awards and recognitions for his pioneering work, including the ‘Real Hero of India’ honour from Mukesh Ambani, a renowned businessman.
