Area code 313 is the
telephone area
code serving the city of Detroit, Michigan
, and some of the city's innermost enclave cities
(Hamtramck
and Highland Park
), including Dearborn
, Redford
and Grosse
Pointe. Until December 1, 1993, it served the entire
Metro Detroit region plus nearby
Flint
and the
southern part of Michigan's "Thumb", but
explosive demand for new phone numbers (caused principally by the
spread of fax machines and cellular phones) caused northern suburbs,
Flint and the southern Thumb to adopt the new area code 810. Later, that area would
be subdivided further, into 248,
largely serving Oakland County
, and 586, covering
Macomb
County
. Meanwhile on December 13, 1997, the 313 area
also required an additional breakup, creating the new 734 area out of Washtenaw
, Monroe
, and western Wayne
counties.
Advertisers in the city of Detroit try to connect themselves with
the 313 area code. One is
Faygo which runs ads
with 313 with the '1' being pictured as a one-liter bottle (Faygo's
unique bottling size) of Faygo
pop.
In popular media
The area code 313 was used in the movie
8 Mile by rapper
Eminem in reference to all the people in
Detroit.
On the front cover of
Eminem's 2009 album
Relapse there is a mock prescription
label, the number 313 appears under quantity.
Ludacris featuring
Nate Dogg "

Codes" where lists all the phone numbers 313 in the line on his
2001 release,
Word of
Mouf.
