Avram Hershko ( ) (born 31 December 1937) is an Israelimarker biochemist and Nobel laureate in Chemistry.

Biography

Born Herskó Ferenc in Karcagmarker, Hungarymarker, Hershko emigrated to Israel in 1950. Received his M.D. in 1965 and his Ph. D in 1969 from the Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel. He is currently a Distinguished Professor at the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technionmarker in Haifamarker.

Along with Aaron Ciechanover and Irwin Rose, he was awarded the 2004 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery of ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation. The ubiquitin-proteasome pathway has a critical role in maintaining the homeostasis of cells and is believed to be involved in the development and progression of diseases such as: cancer, muscular and neurological diseases, immune and inflammatory responses.

Involvement with Biotechnology

Professor Hershko serves on the Scientific Advisory Board of Oramed Pharmaceuticals. Along with Prof. Hershko, Derek Leroith, Ele Ferrannini, Nir Barzilai, Ehud Arbit, and Miriam Kidron lead Oramed's scientific leadership team. Oramed is currently developing an Oral Insulin capsule, ORMD-0801. Oramed's Oral Insulin capsule is currently being tested on patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in South Africa.

Additionally, Professor Hershko served on the Board of Directors of the Ivax Corporation. The company develops specialty generic pharmaceuticals, respirator drugs, and cancer treatments. Ivax was acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries in January 2006.
