BBC Kids is a Canadian
English language category 2 digital cable specialty channel owned by CW Media (a
division of Canwest and GS Capital Partners) and BBC Worldwide. Its programming is aimed
at youth ranging from
pre-schoolers to
teens.
While the BBC's children's brand is
CBBC,
presumably using that name in Canada would cause confusion with the
CBC (
Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation).
Programming
Since BBC Kids is licensed as a Canadian channel, the
Canadian
Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission requires
that it air a quota of Canadian content. Therefore, along with
British series, it also airs a number of Canadian series as well.
In
addition to the British and Canadian programs that form the
majority of the schedule, BBC Kids airs programs from other
countries such as Australia, the United States
and more.

BBCK
April 3, 2006, the original owners of BBC Kids, Alliance Atlantis,
unveiled
BBCK, a new branding for the evening and
late night block of programming beginning at 9 pm
EST on BBC Kids which was
aimed towards an older audience.
They also launched a separate website
making it appear as though BBCK was a separate channel similar to
the former agreement between Noggin/The N in the
United
States
. In early 2008 when Canwest purchased
Alliance Atlantis, BBCK was shut down and the evening block of
programming no longer features separate branding.
History
Licensed
by the Canadian
Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) in
November 2000 to Alliance Atlantis
, the channel was launched on September 7, 2001

On January
