Barbil is a town and a municipality in the Kendujhar district of the state of Orissamarker, Indiamarker.

The region around Barbil has the fifth largest deposit of iron ore and manganese ore in the world. It is a major source of revenue generation for both the central and the state government. The residents of Barbil unfortunately do not get any benefits out of the revenue generated. The basic infrastructure particularly the roads (roads leading towards Rourkela and Tatanagar are at a Misarable state 80Km towards each side, It takes 6 to 8 hours to reach Kendujharmarker which is the District head quarters situated 77K.M due to traffic jam) and public health are non-existent and the state government has made no attempts to improve this. The nearest available fire tender is in Champua about 50 km away, and will therefore take an average of four hours to arrive in case of a fire. The politicians of the region have made no attempts to improve the basic infrstructure and the benefits do not flow to common people at all.Barbil has a cosmopolitan culture due to the influx of people from almost all states of India and boast of a very good convent school by the name 'St. Mary's School'.

Demographics

 India census, Barbil had a population of 52,586. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Barbil has an average literacy rate of 64%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; with 69% of the males and 59% of females literate. 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.


Industry

Barbil is an industrialised town with a number of plants, crushers and mines around. This place is very rich in iron ore other minerals found are manganese ore. The latest demand is for Iron Ore Fines which are being exported to China. Steel is manufactured and liquid oxygen is also produced here. In this area a large number of industries have grown up. Pig Iron and Spun Pipes are manufactured at Kalinga Iron Works, (A State Govt Undertaking under Idicol). It remains to seen how the new government directive increasing the cost of export of raw iron ore affects the economy of Barbil town.Good news for people of the region- Arya Iron & Steel Co (P) Ltd has opened its Iron Ore Pellet plant here, it is only the third plant after Vizag and Chennai ones to use such technology. Champion Filters an organisation from bangalore has now taken over 64% of the manganese ore mines and now is exporting to china. This has led to good employment oppurtunities for the people as the group has strict policy of employing only the localites.

Transport

Barbil is connected to Kolkatamarker and Jamshedpurmarker by train. It connected to major cities by road, it is also connected to Kolkata, Kendujhar and Bhubaneswarmarker by road. Before January 2008, there was air service from Barbil. There is one Janshatabdi express from Howrah to Barbil and one passenger train from Tatanagar to Barbil.

Accomodation

There are many lodges located. But for executives preffering a star hotel there is one HOTEL Lucky India. It is safe place to stay but quite costly. One time meal (veg) would cost around 300/- but there is no choice. There is a bar and restaurant.
