Berria is the only newspaper published wholly in the Basque language and which can be read in the entirety of the Basque country. It was created after the closure of the previous Basque language newspaper, Egunkaria, by the Spanishmarker Courts, after being accused of having ties with ETA. The newspaper shutdown was regarded by many as an "attack on freedom of speech and the Basque language." After more than 5 years, the case has not come to trial yet.

Berria is published daily, with the exception of Monday. The first issue was released on 21 June, 2003. The newspaper's headquarters is in Andoainmarker, Gipuzkoamarker, in the autonomous Basque region, Euskadimarker, in northern Spainmarker. There are also centres in Vitoria-Gasteizmarker, Pamplonamarker, Bilbaomarker and Bayonnemarker.
