The Big 12 Championship Game is a college football game held by the Big 12 Conference each year. The championship game pits the Big 12 North Division champion against the South Division champion in a game held after the regular season has been completed.

The Big 12 South currently holds an overall lead of 9-4 over the Big 12 North in the game.

History

The first championship game was played after the 1996 regular season, which was the first year of play for the Big 12 (which was created from the Big Eight Conference and four teams from the Southwest Conference). The game was slightly modeled after the SEC Championship Game (which had been played since 1992) in the 6-team division format with the winner playing the winner of the other division. Since the 1996 season, the most football championships have been held at Arrowhead Stadiummarker in Kansas City, Missourimarker.

The 2008 Big 12 Championship Game was held on December 6, 2008. Per Big 12 policy, the Big 12 South Champion was declared the home team because the game was scheduled to take place in the home state of a Big 12 North team. Designated "home" teams were 8-4 in Big 12 Championship Games prior to the contest, and with the win of the Oklahoma Sooners over the Missouri Tigers, the record was extended to 9-4. Due to a 3-way tie in the South division, Oklahoma represented the South over both Texas and Texas Tech, with whom they tied. (see South Division 3-way-tie controversy)

In both 2009 and 2010, the game will be played at Cowboys Stadiummarker in Arlington, Texasmarker.
