William ("Bill") Gairdner (born October 19, 1940 in Oakville, Ontariomarker) attended Appleby Collegemarker in Oakville, and is now a resident of Willowdale, Ontariomarker. He is a retired track and field athlete, who represented Canadamarker in the men's 400m hurdles and the men's decathlon at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japanmarker. He was awarded a silver medal in decathlon event at the 1963 Pan American Games in Brazilmarker.

After the 1964 Olympics, in 1967, Gairdner completed an M.A. in Structural Linguistics from Stanford Universitymarker and an M.A. in English Literature and Creative Writing from the school in 1969. Gairdner went on to receive his Ph.D. in English Literature from Stanford in 1970.

Gairdner is and the author of seven books, including The Trouble with Canada, The Trouble with Democracy and Oh, Oh, Canada! which have been published by BPS Books.
