Birendra Sainik Awasiya Mahavidyalaya
(BSAM) is a military boarding high school of Nepal
.
Also known
as Birendra Military Boarding High School, it was established in
1986 in Sallaghari, Bhaktapur
with the aim of imparting quality education.
The majority of the students are from military families. The school
boards all the boys from class 4 to 12 whereas all the girls are
day scholars. Recently different branches have been established in
the major cities of Nepal (Pokhara and Dharan).
History
1978, with the joint investment of the
Nepali Army (the then Royal Nepalese Army) and
Tribhuvan University Suping
Campus was established at Suping, Bhimphedi of Makawanpur district.
With its foundation, the campus conducted classes for the
intermediate level in the faculty of
Humanities and
Social
Science. Later, in 1981, it began classes in the faculty of
Science as well.
Further,
in 1986, the campus was shifted to Sallaghari, Bhaktapur
, with an expansion in the secondary school
level. It was then renamed Birendra Sainik Awasiya
Mahavidyalaya after Late
King Birendra
Bir Bikram Shah. Since then, the funding of the school has been
looked after by Nepal Army Welfare Fund.
BSAM is located in the quiet and peaceful suburb of Bhaktapur
district, Sallaghari. It is free of all the rush of metropolis,
surrounded by greenery, making it an appropriate place for
education. Students here usually follow military lifestyle, and
after completion of class 12, interested students find it easy to
join the Nepalese Army as Officers.
Curriculum
The educational offerings begin at grade 4, with a competitive
entrance exam for limited seats, and continue through high school.
The school educates students from grades 4 to 10, following the
government curriculum, who finally take the SLC (
School Leaving Certificate).
After completing grade 10, students can choose between Tribhuvan
University's Proficiency Certificate Level (Intermediate) in
Science, Humanities, or the Higher Secondary Education Board's +2
education programme for
Management.
Administration
The institution is controlled administratively by the Nepal Army
Headquarters and academically by eminent teachers and professors.
The highest officer from the military to command and control it is
a
Lt. Colonel. Other military staffs are designated
several posts in administering the Mahavidyalaya as a whole.
Major and
Captain of the Army are officers who
are offered such posts.
Extracurricular activities
The school has, notably, been known for its remarkable performance
in football. Since past years, the school football team has been
bringing most of the football championship trophies home. Balmandir
Cup, Prince Cup, IGP Cup are some of the tournaments where the team
has been a threat for other participating teams.
Recently, the school has restructured its pitch as a standard
cricket pitch, where national and
international level cricket matches have been played. As an
influence, a school cricket team has also been given priority, as a
result, the team has participated in several cricket tournaments
showing good performance.
The physical trainings given by the army instructors have made the
boys develop great physical fitness. Thus, participating and
performing well in several national level sports activities such as
athletics, volleyball and basketball is common.
