Bridget Murphy (1824 – December 20, 1888) was the wife of Patrick Kennedy, paternal grandmother to Joseph P. Kennedy, and a great-grandmother to the assassinated United Statesmarker President, John F. Kennedy.

Bridget Murphy was the daughter of Philip Murphy and Mary Barron, from Gusserane, near New Rossmarker (Ros Mhic Thriúin), County Wexfordmarker, Irelandmarker.

Marriage and family

She married Patrick Kennedy on September 26, 1849, in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Bostonmarker, Massachusettsmarker. They had the following five children:

After Patrick's death

Patrick Kennedy succumbed to the highly infectious cholera that infested East Boston, and died on November 22, 1858—105 years to the day before his great-grandson John F. Kennedy was assassinated. Bridget later went on to buy a stationery and 'notions' store in east Boston where she had worked. The business took off and expanded into a grocery and liquor store, which helped pave the way for the success of her son P. J. Kennedy.

Later years and death

In the later years, Bridget Kennedy suffered from heart trouble. She died from a stroke on December 20, 1888 at the age of 64.
