Recent developments

In October 2007, Cambodia was eliminated from the 2010 World Cup qualifiers, at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 to Turkmenistan at home in Phnom Penhmarker and 4-1 away in Ashgabatmarker.

On 21 December 2007 it was announced that Yoo Kee-Heung, a South Koreanmarker coach, had been hired as the Cambodia national team coach. This appointment was reported to be part of a sponsorship deal with a Korean technology company worth $205 000 a year, half of which will be Yoo's salary.

On July, 2008 the Cambodian Football Federation fired South Korean coach Yoo Kee-Heung from the national team after poor results and the lack of a coaching license and he has been replaced by local coach Prak Sovannara.

Places for improvement

There is good physical conditioning of the young players but they lack football IQ. Former Cambodian football star, Hok Socheatra said "They can pass, they can shoot, but they don't know how to [lose] the defender to create space to have a chance at goal. They don't know how to [outsmart] the goalkeeper."
