While studying real estate at The Ohio State Universitymarker, Charley Shin worked in his mother’s Japanese/Korean restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. A wrong turn on a family trip to New York Citymarker resulted in Charley’s discovery of the Philly steak sub. Charley convinced his mother to take a break, sell the restaurant, and invest in “Charley’s,” a restaurant across the street from The Ohio State Universitymarker campus. Charley’s first decision in the restaurant was to turn the grill around to face the customers, so they could always see their food being cooked, a move that would later become the trademark of the Charley’s Grilled Subs chain.

Charley's features grilled subs, gourmet fries and natural lemonade. Fries can be topped with cheddar cheese sauce, ranch dressing and/or bacon. The original lemonade is accompanied by a rotating seasonal selection, including kiwi, strawberry, raspberry and others.

Charley's product attributes include:USDAmarker choice steak, no oil on the grill, fries are fried in cholesterol-free oil, all dairy cheese, 100% white meat chicken breast, natural lemonade, grilled in front of the customer, and no microwaves, heating lamps or pre-packaged cold cuts.

Charley's Supports Brotherly Love

In the fall of 2008, Utahmarker-area Charley's franchisee Marcus Gilbert, took the day off from cooking Philly CheeseSteaks to donate a kidney to his 16-year-old employee, Juan Delgado. Juan's battle with end-stage renal disease began three years ago. In March, Marcus stepped forward and offered him a position at the Charley's Grilled Subs at the University Mall in Orem, Utahmarker.

Shortly after starting work, Juan learned he needed a kidney transplant. No one in his family was a donor match, so Marcus immediately got tested, found out he was a match, and agreed to donate his kidney to his young employee.

During National Philly CheeseSteak Month, January 12–February 8, Charley's donated a portion of each sub sold to the National Kidney Foundation. In March 2009, Charley's presented a check for $10,000 to the National Kidney Foundation to support Marcus and Juan and because of their dedicated efforts to prevent kidney and urinary tract diseases.
