Chistopol or Chistay ( ; ; ) is a town in the Republic of Tatarstan, Russiamarker, located on the left bank of the Kuybyshev Reservoirmarker, on the Kama River. Population: It is served by Chistopol Airportmarker.

History

The first mention of the settlement appeared in chronicles at the end of the 17th century and beginning of the 18th century.The settlement developed very quickly, and by 1761 the number of inhabitants exceeded 1000 people.

In 1781 a decree of Catherine II of Russia gave Chistopol county town status , with the establishment of its own coat of arms.

At the end of 19th century, Chistopol became a major center of trade for grain. Prior to 1917 it was the second largest (after Kazan), city in Kazan province.

During the Great Patriotic War, Chistopol become a shelter for the Union of Soviet Writers, which included Boris Pasternak, Leonid Leonov and other notables.
