History

Founded the 19th of August, 1970, football club Universidad de Guadalajara started in the tercera división, where they played for two seasons, after gaining promotion to Segunda División Profesional, having the nickname Leones. After purchasing the franchise of Torreón, they took the team to promotion, thanks to the big Brazilian players they had, news reporter Angel Fernández changed the nickname to Leones Negros.

After 21 years in top flight football, a series of questionable financial dealings in the administration by Raúl Padilla López, a very poor squad and hardly any fans in Jalisco, where the most popular teams are Club Deportivo Guadalajara better known as "Chivas" and in a lower extension Club Atlas de Tlaquepaque, Leones Negros are acquired by the Federación Mexicana de Fútbol Asociación, to make way for the reduction in the number of teams in the Primera División. Their last game was against Atlas, in which they lost 2-1.

New Era

After the disappearance of the team the Federación Mexicana de Futbol, the franchise was retained to the third division, who obtained a title in verano 1997, gaining promotion to the Primera División "A" where they stayed until the franchise was sold and moved to Coatzacoalcos, again because of the decision and management of Rector General Raúl Padilla López.

The team currently plays in the Segunda División Mexicana playing in the Norte region, a few seasons back the team was close to gaining promotion to the Primera División A, first losing the final against, Académicos and then losing to Chivas La Piedad. For the Apertura 2007 season they changed stadiums to Estadio Municipal Santa Rosa de Ciudad Guzmánmarker, Jaliscomarker, but have stated that some of their home games will still played at Estadio Jaliscomarker.

Return to the Primera División A

Since long ago, many businessmen among whom was Jorge Vergara, tried to return the team of Club Universidad de Guadalajara to the top divisions of football in Mexico, and this was achieved through the purchase of the franchise from Primera División A of CD Tapatio in $800,000 USD to Club Deportivo Guadalajara, owner of his rights and hold the team as subsidiary.

On May 21 of 2009 was confirmed that the team Club Universidad de Guadalajara entered to the Primera División A instead of CD Tapatio, which disappeared completely.
