The
Construction Industry Council (CIC) is the
representative body for the professional bodies, research
organizations and specialist business associations in the construction industry in the United Kingdom
. It was formed in 1988 as the
Building
Industry Council and changed its name in April 1990.
Activities
The Construction Industry Council aims to provide a single voice
for professionals in all sectors of the built environment in the UK
through its collective membership of 500,000 individual
construction professionals and 25,000 firms of construction
consultants
The Construction Industry Council also represents the views of the
higher level of the industry (professional, managerial and
technical) in
ConstructionSkills,
the
Sector Skills Council for
construction. ConstructionSkills is a partnership between CIC,
CITB-ConstructionSkills and
CITB Northern Ireland.
The Construction Industry Council developed and operates the
Design Quality Indicator
(
DQI) tool to measure the design quality of
buildings.
Organisation
The Construction Industry Council's work is managed on a day-to day
basis by a small secretariat which works under the direction of the
Chief Executive who is responsible to the Council.
The Executive Board acts as the main policy and strategy vehicle of
the Council. Full Members are represented through five Electoral
Colleges: Business; Chartered; College of Independent Professional
Institutes; Education; and Research.
The Electoral Colleges nominate representatives to Council and
Standing Committees, through which CIC accomplishes its work. There
are currently six Standing Committees: Lifelong Learning; Finance;
Industry Improvement; Forum for Research Innovation and Knowledge;
National Regions; and Sustainable Development.
Each Committee is supported by a number of panels task forces,
response groups and project steering groups which are established
to meet the needs of current activities. The task forces and
response groups have a limited life and are disbanded when their
work is complete.
