Courageous is the upcoming fourth film by Sherwood Pictures, who previously made Flywheel, Facing the Giants and Fireproof. It is a film about fatherhood that Sherwood Baptist Church hopes will convict men to rise up and be spiritual leaders of their children and families.

Four men, one calling: To serve and protect. As law enforcement officers, they face danger every day. Yet when tragedy strikes close to home, these fathers are left wrestling with their hopes, their fears, and their faith. From this struggle will come a decision that changes all of their lives.

The title and plot of Courageous were announced on November 15, 2009. Sherwood Pictures/Provident Films decided, "After much prayer, creative brainstorming, more prayer, wise counsel, and still more prayer, Sherwood Pictures is ready to move ahead with their fourth motion picture." Before the announcement, the filmmakers launched, which contained video clues and bits of information about Courageous, although nothing was officially known about it before the announcement. No major clues were released.

The announcement was made on November 15 by Alex Kendrick and other members of the Sherwood Pictures leadership team, Michael Catt, Jim McBride and Stephen Kendrick. About 1,300 people gathered at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgiamarker for the announcement. More than 60 media outlets were expected to be present. Alex Kendrick said, "Lord willing we will shoot next year. But again a lot has to fall into place. We're not saying anything is in stone. We're still in stages of prayer." The same as the previous three Sherwood films, Courageous will be marketed by Provident Films.

At the time of Courageous' announcement, the Kendrick brothers had completed about 80 percent of the plot, and they plan to finish the script by the end of 2009. Casting is projected to begin in early 2010, and filming will take place in Spring 2010. Co-producer and co-writer Stephen Kendrick said the film's desire is for men to leave the theater making the decision that Joshua made when he declared, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). Director Alex Kendrick commented, "Is this [movie] likely to be controversial? You bet. But are we going to back down from what the Lord has told us to do? No way." The film is tentatively expected to be released in early 2011.

The production budget for Courageous has not yet been announced, but Alex Kendrick previously said at the February 6–10, 2009, National Religious Broadcasters Convention that the film would have an expected budget of $2.5 million–five times larger than with Fireproof. In less than three days, the film attained over 8,000 Facebook fans.
