Crank is a novel by Ellen Hopkins published in 2004. The story is loosely based on the events of Hopkins' own daughter, who began to use drugs and became pregnant as a teen. The sequel to Crank is Glass.

Kristina Georgia Snow is the perfect daughter: gifted high school junior, quiet, never any trouble. But on a trip to visit her absent father, Kristina disappears and Bree, an alternate personality to Kristina, takes her place. Bree is the exact opposite of Kristina--she's fearless.

Through a boy, Bree meets the monster: crank. And what begins as a wild, ecstatic ride turns into a struggle through hell for her mind, her soul--her life.

Kristina goes to New Mexicomarker to see her father. When she goes, the first night she meets a boy named Adam, who pretty much introduced her to the monster. They are instantly attracted to each other. One night, Adam shows Kristina or "Bree" crank, the monster. She says she has never felt this amazing in her life. She and Adam begin a romance until she has to go back to Nevadamarker to be with her mother, stepfather, homosexual sister, and brother. However, she brings the addiction with her. She meets two boys named Brendan and Chase. They both have connections to the monster. Chase and Kristina bond more and more and they eventually fall in love. Her addiction to crank grows when she makes friends with Robyn, a sister of Trent (a former friend of Kristina). Robyn has connections to drugs, and teaches Kristina how to smoke it. Despite her infatuation with Chase, she falls in love with Brendan. Brendan wants one thing from Kristina or "Bree" and rapes her after a party. After the party, Kristina reveals her truly name, rather than Bree so Brendan takes her back home and never has anything to do with her again. Weeks pass and she finds out she is pregnant. Chase is sure it is his baby, so he proposes to her. She finds out at the doctor's office that Brendan was the father. Kristina turns down the proposal so she won't ruin Chase's life. Chase goes off to UCLA in Californiamarker with a full scholarship and writes to her from time to time. Kristina keeps the baby, naming him Hunter Seth, and her parents help her raise it. Kristina ends the novel believing Bree will always be a part of her, and her addiction to crank will always be with her as well. But for now, she has quit the monster to love and take care of the baby.
