The
Damallsvenskan, "ladies' all-Swedish", is the
highest division of women's
football in Sweden
. It
is also referred as to the women's
Allsvenskan, this term being used alone to refer
to the men's division.
The division consists of a
league of
12 teams. There is a
relegation system in
place with the Swedish Women's Division 1, which is split into
Northern and Southern sections. The two lowest ranked teams in the
league are relegated and replaced by the winners of the two
Division 1 leagues.
The women's division was first held in 1973. Until the advent of
Women's Professional
Soccer, the Damallsvenskan was considered to be the best
women's league, since the
previous American league
went bankrupt. The Damallsvenskan was home to players like
Marta Vieira da Silva,
Daniela Alves Lima,
Nadine Angerer,
Lisa
De Vanna and
Hanna Ljungberg,
although at the moment only Angerer is still playing in Sweden,
with Ljungberg retired due to injury, and the others all playing in
America for the
WPS.
