Dennis Patrick Lamp (born September 23 1952 in Los Angeles, Californiamarker) is a former middle relief pitcher in Major League Baseball. From 1977 through 1992, Lamp played for the Chicago Cubs (1977-80), Chicago White Sox (1981-83), Toronto Blue Jays (1984-86), Oakland Athletics (1987), Boston Red Sox (1988-91) and Pittsburgh Pirates (1992). He batted and threw right-handed.

Career

In a 19-season career, Lamp posted a 96-96 record with a 3.93 ERA and 35 saves in 639 games pitched. His best season was 1985: 11-0 and a 3.32 ERA in 105 innings.

Facts

  • San Francisco Giants first baseman Willie McCovey hit his 513th career home run off Lamp, establishing him as the National League all-time left-handed home run leader (June 14, 1979).
  • Lamp also gave up Lou Brock's 3000th career hit on August 13 of the same 1979 season. Brock hit a line drive that caromed off Lamp's pitching hand.
  • When Lamp signed as a free agent with Toronto, the White Sox claimed pitcher Tom Seaver from the Mets as compensation for the loss of Lamp. The Mets left Seaver off their protected list assuming that no team would want him (January 20, 1984).
