The Diocese of Durham is a Church of England diocese, based in Durhammarker, and covering the historic County Durham (and therefore including the southern part of Tyne and Wear, the boroughs of Darlington, Hartlepoolmarker and the area of Stockton-on-Teesmarker north of the River Teesmarker). It was created in AD 1000 to replace the Diocese of Lindisfarnemarker. The cathedral is Durham Cathedralmarker and the bishop is the Bishop of Durham who lives at Auckland Castlemarker, Bishop Aucklandmarker. The diocese's administrative centre, the Diocesan Office, is located in the Scotland Wing of Auckland Castlemarker.

The diocese was reduced in 1882, when the part north of the River Tyne became the Diocese of Newcastlemarker.
