Dombivli or
Dombivali ( ) is a city in Thane District, Kalyan tehsil in Maharashtra
, India
.
It is
located about fifty kilometres from the city of Mumbai
, and about
twenty kilometres from Thane
. The
population of the city, according to the 2001 census is 1,193,000 .
It is
located south of Ulhas
river.
Government
In 1984,
Dombivli Municipal Council was merged with that of neighboring
Kalyan
to form a new governing body, the Kalyan Dombivli
Municipal Corporation. At present, the Mayor of the city is
Ramesh Sudam Jadhav from
Shivsena.
Demographics and Culture
The
population of Dombivli has over the
years been subject to dynamic influences. The city's population is
predominantly
Marathi-speaking
Maharashtrians but people from all over the
country have made Dombivli their home.
Significant number of
people from Gujarat
, Karnataka
, Tamil
Nadu
, Kerala
, Uttar Pradesh
and Punjab are to be
found here, with a marginal population of Khojas (The Aga-Khan
sect).
The unique culture of Dombivli is reflected in the 'Navavarsha
Swagat
Yatra' that started in the city in late
1990s. The Yatra is organised on the first day of the Hindu New
Year. People from and near Dombivli take part with their own
'Chitrarathas' to welcome the new year. Dombivli has a unique,
mixed culture. People celebrate every festival from
Diwali to
Eid, Dandiya, Ganpati
etc.
Economy
Dombivli has been witnessing a rapid industrial growth. The
industrial part of the city has a large number of factories
manufacturing dyes, paints, and industrial/agricultural chemicals.
Heavy metal factories manufacturing a wide variety of equipments
are also based in this region. A few, nationally prominent
industrial establishments which have manufacturing plants in
Dombivli are Gharda Chemicals, Vicco Labs, Lloyd Steel, and Deepak
Fertilizers. The city has three railway stations under its
jurisdiction: Dombivli Railway Station, Thakurli Railway Station,
Kopar Railway station.
Education
Dombivli also has the honour of becoming the first fully literate
city in Maharashtra and the second in India (a town in Kerala is
first). Over a hundred schools offer primary and secondary
education, and over a dozen are affiliated with the
University of Mumbai. Abhinav
Vidyalaya, MIDC is well known for its ISCE type schooling. A couple
of colleges also offer technical education and are affiliated with
the Board of Technical Examination, Mumbai. ASTITVA school is in an
Institute which caters to the education of different type of
physically challenged people.Schools is Dombivali rose to fame in
late 80s and early 90s for getting excellent and consistent results
at the SSC exams of Maharashtra State board. Dombivli proves to be
exceptionally good in education. every year it has s.s.c and h.s.c
board toppers in mumbai board. Apart from this it has an excellent
result in other competitve exams.
S.V. Joshi Highschool of G.E.I. near Thakurli station is the older
most & first school in Dombivali. Mumbai Cricketer

school.
