Hart was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress (March 4, 1877March 3, 1879).He was not a candidate for renomination in 1878.He resumed his former business pursuits.Founder and president of the Rochester (New York) Post-Express in 1882.He served as president of Orleans County National Bank 1890-1893.He died in Albion, New York, February 18, 1893 leaving $50,000.00 for the construction of the First Presbyterian Church of Albion, NY.He was interred in Mount Albion Cemetery.
