Encounter Bay is located on the south central coast of South Australiamarker, some 100km south of Adelaidemarker, South Australia. It is named after the encounter on 1802-04-08 between Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin, both of whom were charting the Australian coastline for their respective countries (Britainmarker and Francemarker). The encounter between the scientists was peaceful, even though their countries were at war at the time.

The bay is a wide curve of coastline extending from Newland Head (The Bluff) along the south coast of Fleurieu Peninsula past Victor Harbormarker, Goolwamarker and the mouth of the Murray Rivermarker then southeast along the Coorongmarker to Kingston SEmarker.
