Estranged are a Malaysian alternative rock band that formed in Damansara, Kuala Lumpurmarker in 2001. Currently comprising vocalist Rich Gimbang, lead guitarist Nor "Enha" Hanafi, rhythm guitarist Din Hormatov and drummer Azwin Andy, the band have released two full-length albums: In Hating Memory (2004) and Remain Unknown (2008).

The band held their first ever live show in 2001 at TwelveSI. The band has also gone through many changes to its line-up, including original lead guitarist Adzrai departing to further his studies. New grunge-influenced guitarist, Hanafi replaces him. Estranged participated in the "Yamaha Asian Beat Competition" in 2001, finishing 2nd runners-up for the competition.

After Rock the World 4 (Malaysia's annual rock festival), the band started work on their debut 11-track album 'In Hating Memory', released in December 2004. The album includes 10 English tracks, and 1 Malay track. Their first single 'Velocity' started receiving airplay in June 2005, followed by the second single 'Chocolate Syrup'. Both singles were accompanied by music videos, directed by Motion Notion and Tan Chee Meng, respectively.

In the middle of 2006, Rich controversially decides to participate in Malaysia’s most watched reality program Akademi Fantasia. Rich happened to be the very first contestant to be in a band which was active in the local underground scene. However, Rich did not finish as the champion of the reality show but it is later revealed, Rich had raked in a lot more supporters for the band.

The band kicked off year 2007 with the release of the repackaged album 'In Hating Memory' by adding a Malay language track which turned out to be a nationwide major hit called 'Itu Kamu'. The music video was shot by award-winning director Jack Wung.

The hottest band in Malaysia at the moment, Estranged never fails to rouse a crowd with their energetic fist-pumping music and introspective lyrics. All over the country, fans have been wowed by the Estranged sound, a blend of nu-metal, alternative and hard rock, with even grunge thrown in the mix.

Since winning the Best Song Award at the Anugerah Juara Lagu music competition in 2008, Estranged has progressed at breakneck pace, chalking up two albums under their belt, including one hit single, 'Itu Kamu'. In October 2008, Estranged released their sophomore album, 'Remain Unknown'. The album comprises 8 English and 5 Malay tracks, centering on niggling environmental problems, social mishaps, and political anomie.

Their first single of the album is titled 'Yang Pernah', followed by 'Aurora'. 'This World' is a melodic, yet profound take on the global destruction of nature. True to their rock roots, head-banging riffs are strewn all across the album, such as on tracks like 'In No Time', which never fails to get the crowd up on their feet and moving during the band's live performances.

"We're always looking for a new sound that brings fresh life to the music industry, and we never want to be limited when it comes to making music," said Estranged frontman Rich, commenting on the band's varied song repertoire. Having impressed many with their music videos and live performances, Estranged has already added major festivals like Soundrenaline and Sunburst to their swelling gig list. The band is also slated to perform at one of the biggest festivals in Taiwan, the Ho Hai Yan Rock Festival. Looks like only the sky is the limit for Malaysia’s finest rock act.

The band rocked fans with their high-tempo tracks alongside The All-American Rejects, Hoobastank, Raygun, Boys Like Girls, Pixie Lott and Kasabian as one of the live acts at Asia's very first MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia concert that was held in Malaysiamarker on the 15th of August 2009.

With a bit more diversity in the music arrangement, providing more variety between tracks, Estranged could well be an undiscovered Malaysian gem.-TERRINA HUSSEIN, The Malay Mail, 15 June 2005

Estranged's approach may seem middle ground, but there's still plenty of anger, as evident with plenty songs on 'In Hating Memory' being about times.-ADLIN ROSLI, New Sunday Times, 26 June 2005
