Location of the ferry route

Fehmarn Belt ( , formerly also spelled Femer Bælt) is a strait connecting the Bay of Kielmarker and the Bay of Mecklenburg in the western part of the Baltic Seamarker between the Germanmarker island of Fehmarnmarker and the Danishmarker island of Lollandmarker. Ferries operated by Scandlines connect Puttgardenmarker and Rødbymarker on the two islands.

The Danish and German governments agreed on 29 June 2007 to build a bridgemarker to replace the ferry route. It is scheduled for completion by 2018 allowing travellers to save 1 hour on crossing the strait.

The strait features a 18 kilometer (10 nmi) wide area with depths of 20–30 meters. Currents in the strait are weak and mostly dependent on wind.
