Germanwings is a low-cost airline based in Cologne, Germanymarker. It operates services to over 66 destinations in Europe. Its main base is Cologne Bonn Airportmarker, with secondary bases at Stuttgart Airportmarker, Berlin-Schönefeld International Airportmarker,Hamburg Airportmarker and Dortmund Airportmarker. The airline has been wholly owned by Lufthansamarker since 1 January 2009.

Its main competitors are other no frills carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet, TUIfly and Air Berlin.


The airline was established in 1997 as Eurowings Flug GmbH, and was renamed to Germanwings GmbH on 27 October 2002. The airline is the first low cost airline in Germany which offers connecting flights. This programme was founded in Autumn 2007 and is called Smart Connect.

On 29 January 2008, plans were announced to merge low-cost airline operations of Deutsche Lufthansa AG and TUI Travel PLC (Germanwings, Eurowings, TUIfly) into a joint and independent holding company. These plans were scrapped in October 2008.

In December 2008, it was announced that Germanwings would be sold entirely to Lufthansa, effective 1 January 2009.



The Germanwings fleet consists of the following aircraft (as of 15 September 2009,

  • 27 Airbus A319

As of 1 November 2009, Germanwings fleet age is 4.8 years old.

On 7 December 2005, the airline signed an agreement to purchase 18 Airbus A319 aircraft (with a further 12 options). These are their first direct orders with Airbus, with deliveries from July 2006 until 2008. During winter 2004–2005 Germanwings leased two Boeing 717 from Aerolíneas de Baleares to test this type, but no order was made after.

Inflight services

Germanwings operates the Sky Bistro (Bord Shop in German), a buy on board programme offering food and drinks for purchase (food is not included in ticket price).

Special livery

Some of its aircraft have special livery in order to promote the city mentioned on its fuselage. Currently there are special liveries for the German cities of Berlin, Hamburg and Stuttgart.
