Gert Verheyen (born September 20, 1970 in
Hoogstraten
) is a Belgian
footballer who played for Club Brugge and R.S.C. Anderlecht.
In a 16-year professional career in the
Jupiler League, Verheyen was known to have
rather few technical skills, relying in a hard-working
approach.
After more than 500 overall appearances for Brugge, with an
instrumental role in the side's conquest of five leagues and
cups, he retired on
May
5,
2006,becoming a reserve team trainer at
the club in 2006-07 and quitting football subsequently at the
season's end.
International career
Verheyen was part of the
Belgium national team for the
1998 and
2002 World Cups, as well as
Euro 2000. His career with Belgium was dulled when
he was
sent off at 2-0 for Belgium
against
Mexico in the
1998 edition, his foul causing a
penalty as the match would eventually end 2-2.
In spite of this event he kept his place in the basic team until he
retired after the 2002 World Cup.
