Golden Tulip Hotels, with its head office in Lausanne, Switzerlandmarker, is a worldwide hospitality company with more than 780 hotels and 75,000 rooms in more than 50 countries. Golden Tulip franchises and manages hotels in Europe, the Middle East & Africa, the Asian Pacific Region and the Americas.In 2009, HOTELS Magazine has ranked this company the world's 14th largest hotel chain.

History

  • 1962 Golden Tulip Hotels is founded in the Netherlands by a group of six independent hoteliers.


  • 1975 Golden Tulip Hotels and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines enter into a joint venture agreement initiating the company Golden Tulip Hotels Worldwide, which aims to expand through brand licensing.


  • 1980 The licensing and hotel management businesses are consolidated into one company named Golden Tulip International.


  • 1990 KLM divests of its shares in Golden Tulip allowing both companies to focus on their respective core businesses.


  • 1993 Introduction of limited service hotel brand Tulip Inn.


  • 1996 A five-year agreement is negotiated with Utell International to operate the hotel licensing business of Golden Tulip and Tulip Inn under the name Golden Tulip Worldwide.


  • 2001 NH Hotels adds Golden Tulip Worldwide (franchise portfolio) to the recently acquired Golden Tulip International hotels (management portfolio).


  • 2002 Golden Tulip Worldwide demerges from NH Hotels through a management buyout. Golden Tulip forms a commercial alliance with TOP International Hotels comprising 250 hotels in the Central European region.


  • 2003 Golden Tulip initially acquires 20% (eventually 30%) of the shares in EuroTulip, a newly formed hotel management entity operating six existing Golden Tulip and Tulip Inn hotels in the Netherlands.


  • 2004 Golden Tulip forms a commercial alliance with B&B Hotels, a French based company with over 100 hotels.


  • 2005 The renamed Golden Tulip Hospitality Group forms a strategic alliance with Stella Hospitality (formerly known as THL). Through the acquiring of full ownership of EuroTulip, Golden Tulip redefines its management division.


  • 2006 Golden Tulip introduces upper upscale brand ‘Royal Tulip’ and a unique restaurant brand and concept “BRANCHE Restaurant, Bar & Lounge”. Hotels Magazine ranked Golden Tulip the 18th largest hotel chain.


  • 2007 Golden Tulip expands its management portfolio to over 70 hotels, re-launches its corporate website and enters new markets such as China and India.


Starwood Capital

In 2009, Golden Tulip was purchased by Starwood Capital Group, the private investment firm behind hospitality brands such as Westin, Sheraton, W Hotels & Le Méridien.

According to a statement, through the terms of the acquisition, Starwood has acquired all Golden Tulip’s franchises, development and representation businesses, JV interests, brands, trademarks and intellectual property.

Golden Tulip Hospitality CEO, Hans Kennedie: “I am very much relieved that the Golden Tulip Brand and the worldwide franchise network that was built over the years will be in safe and capable hands and that the continuation of the brands on the long term is safeguarded".

Starwood Capital COO, Desmond Taljaard: Described the move as a “compelling acquisition for Starwood” before adding that Starwood has “a long track record of working with franchisees and we are fully committed to developing and investing in these hotel brands through innovation and continued expansion”.

Loyalty Programs

  • Ambassador Club


The Ambassador Club acknowledges and awards bookings made at any Tulip Inn, Golden Tulip Hotel, Golden Tulip Resort or Royal Tulip Hotel.

  • Flavours


Flavours is Golden Tulip’s loyalty program, launched in June 2006, for frequent guests, in which they save points for the monetary value of their bookings. Points can be redeemed for hotel stays or exchanged for frequent flyer miles of partner airlines and gifts through the Flavours gift shop.
