The Golf de Granville Baie du Mont St Michel is a 27 hole golf course located at Bréville-sur-Mermarker (Manche)marker, approximately 4 miles north of Granvillemarker, Normandy, France.

The course was laid out in 1912 by Harry Colt and is the only true links course in France. In addition to the main 18 hole course, there is a more recent nine hole par 33 links course which is notable for its testing greens!

History

The course was originally designed by Harry Colt and remodelled by Fred Hawtree after the course was requisitioned by the occupying army during World War 2. After Colt's first visit to Granville he wrote a report in which he expressed the view that the success of the project was assured since the site offered the possibility of constructing a top quality golf course.

However, the project was delayed due to the First World War. In 1929, the National Amateur Championship was held at Granville and the following year saw the inauguration of the clubhouse. In 1931, the French International Matchplay Championship was held on the links and was won by G Bentley. Some noteworthy winners of this championship include Francis Ouimet (1914), Tommy Armour (1920) and Sergio García (1997).

The present course layout dates from 1999 and continues to provide an excellent challenge, especially in windy conditions and when the rough is up.

The designer, Christian Dior, was born in Granville and played golf at the Golf de Granville. When he came back from doing his military service in 1928, he organised a small competition for a few of his friends. This idea was taken up by the club in 1973 and since then a competition has been held in his honour each year - La Coupe Dior, of which a photo can be seen below in the gallery.

In 2008, the course was once again the venue for a national championship, the Mid Amateur (+35 years of age). The first photo in the gallery shows the 17th green during this championship which was held at Granville in September 2008.
