Governor's Mansion State Historic Park is the location of Historic Governor's Mansion of California, the former official home of the Governor of California. The mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located at 1526 H Street in Sacramentomarker, the mansion no longer serves as the Governor's official residence and is now used primarily for public and state ceremonies and events. George Pardee was the first governor to live in the house; Ronald Reagan was the last.

The thirty-room Second Empire-Italianate Victorian mansion was built in 1877 for local hardware merchant Albert Gallatin. The State of California purchased the house in 1903 to serve as a governor's mansion. Many furnishings remain from former governors, including Pardee's 1902 Steinway piano, velvet chairs and sofas belonging to Governor Hiram Johnson, and Persian rugs bought by Mrs. Earl Warren.

The structure has been renovated a number of times and just recently finished exterior work to restore the mansion's fading paint as well as replace all of the aging windows with more efficient, modern ones.

The house is open daily to guided public tours, on the hour, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Currently, the state of California does not have an official residence or mansion for its governor. The state had built a governor's residence in the Sacramento suburb of Carmichaelmarker, which was completed just as Reagan left office. Then governor, Jerry Brown, refused to live in the house, which was sold by the state in 1982.

Brown's successors — George Deukmejian, Pete Wilson, and Gray Davis, all lived in a different Carmichael residence that was bought for Deukmejian by a group of his supporters and rented to the state for $1 a year. The present governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, stays in a hotel suite near the Capitolmarker when he is in Sacramento, but ordinarily commutes each day by private plane from his home in the Brentwood areamarker of Los Angelesmarker.

Proposed for closure

Governor's Mansion State Historic Park is one of the 48 California state parks proposed for closure in January 2008 by California's Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger as part of a deficit reduction program.
