Iraqmarker is divided into 18 governorates (or provinces) (muḥāfażah):

  1. Baghdādmarker (بغداد)
  2. Salāh ad-Dīnmarker (صلاح الدين)
  3. Diyālāmarker (ديالى)
  4. Wāsitmarker (واسط)
  5. Maysānmarker (ميسان)
  6. Al-Basrahmarker (البصرة)
  7. Dhī Qārmarker (ذي قار)
  8. Al-Muthannāmarker (المثنى)
  9. Al-Qādisiyyahmarker (القادسية)
  1. Bābilmarker (بابل)
  2. Al-Karbalā'marker (كربلاء)
  3. An-Najafmarker (النجف)
  4. Al-Anbarmarker (الأنبار)
  5. Nīnawāmarker (نينوى)
  6. Duhokmarker (دهوك)
  7. Arbīlmarker (أربيل)
  8. Kirkuk marker (التاميم)
  9. As-Sulaymāniyyahmarker (السليمانية)


The current set of governorates was established in 1976. [31532]

The governorates are divided into qadhas (or districts). The map on the right shows the districts (but does not show the district names) within each governorate.

As of October 2008, thirteen of the eighteen governorates are under direct Iraqi control: Al-Muthannāmarker, Dhī Qārmarker, An-Najafmarker, Maysānmarker, Arbīlmarker, As-Sulaymāniyyahmarker, Duhokmarker, Al-Karbalā'marker, Al-Basrahmarker, Bābilmarker, Wāsitmarker, Al-Qādisiyyahmarker and Al-Anbarmarker. Five governorates are controlled by multi-national coalition forces: Baghdādmarker, Salāh ad-Dīnmarker, Diyālāmarker, Nīnawāmarker, and Kirku marker.

Autonomous Region

Iraq currently has one autonomous region, Kurdish Autonomous Regionmarker, which is also known as Iraqi Kurdistanmarker.
