Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company ( ) is an American company providing services in dredging, beach nourishment, and marine construction, currently the largest such provider in the United Statesmarker.


The company was founded in 1890 as the partnership of William A. Lydon & Fred C. Drews and was named Lydon & Drews dredging company. It was renamed the Great Lakes Dredge and Dock Company in 1905. It is currently based in Oak Brook, Illinoismarker.

From 1991, the company was owned by private equity firms The Blackstone Group and later Madison Dearborn Partners. The company is currently publicly traded after being acquired by a Special purpose acquisition company (SPAC).

1992 incident

In 1992, a barge operated by GLD&D while driving new pilings for the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago accidentally punched into an unused service tunnel passing beneath the river at that point. The tunnel flooded, in turn flooding the basements of many buildings in downtown Chicago; the event is commonly known as the Chicago Flood.
