Great Western Bank is a high-performing community bank based out of Sioux Falls, South Dakotamarker. Great Western Bank currently has assets in excess of $3.5 billion. Upon closing with the upcoming transaction with TierOne Bank, Great Western Bank will have assets of approximately $6.5 billion with 157 locations serving 89 communities.

History

Since their charter began in 1907, Great Western Bank has welcomed thousands of banking relationships in the Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota areas. With assets over $5.1 billion and over 125 banking locations, they’ve gained significant regional presence while Making Life Great in the communities.

On June 4, 2008, the acquisition of Great Western Bancorporation by National Australia Bank (NAB) was completed. Great Western Bancorporation is the holding company of the regional financial institution, Great Western Bank. The acquisition was first announced in November 2007. "By joining with an international banking organization like NAB, we will be able to offer an even broader portfolio of products, services and capabilities while continuing the localized customer service our customers have come to expect from Great Western Bank," said Jeff Erickson, President and Chief Executive Officer of Great Western Bank. "Now we can give our customers the strength of being part of an international financial services group, combined with services and employees that are locally focused."

Great Western Bank announced on September 4, 2009 that it plans to purchase 32 TierOne Bank branches in Nebraska and Western Iowa. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and is anticipated to close in late 2009. Under the terms of the acquisition, Great Western Bank will obtain $800 million in selected loans and $1.1 billion in deposits.
