Greater St. Louis is the common name of the St. Louis-St.Charles, MO-IL CSA, also known as Metro St. Louis. Greater St. Louis is the16th largest in the United States (2008), with a population of 2,877,126. The region is anchored around the Independent City of St. Louismarker, and includes the Missouri counties of Franklinmarker, Jeffersonmarker, Lincolnmarker, St. Charles, St. Francoismarker, St. Louismarker, Warrenmarker and Washingtonmarker; and the Illinois counties of Bondmarker, Calhounmarker, Clintonmarker, Jerseymarker, Macoupinmarker, Madisonmarker, Monroemarker and St. Clairmarker, collectively known as the Metro-East. Population statistics are shown below:

New Greater St. Louis counties

As of now, four new counties have entered the St. Louis Area, one in Missouri (Washingtonmarker), and three in Illinois (Bondmarker, Calhounmarker, and Macoupinmarker). Although the population of all four of the new counties are much smaller than the rest of the existing counties in the St. Louis Metro Area, they are growing much fasterthan the other counties. For example, in Washington County, Missouri, the employment rate grew 66.7% between 1990 to 1999. The St. Louis, MO-IL MSA covers a total area of 8,846 sq. mi. . is land and . is water. The St. Louis CSA includes the Farmington marker, in which the total CSA covers a total of 9,298 sq. mi. is land and . is water.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 21.4 percent of the adult population in St. Louis holds a bachelors degree compared with the national average of 27 percent. Almost 209,000 students are enrolled in the area's nearly 40 colleges, universities, and technical schools.Washington University in St. Louismarker which is one of the top research universities in the nation, internationally known for its schools of Medicine, Architecture, Business, Social Work and Law; the University's school of law is the oldest continuously operating law school west of the Mississippi.In 2006 approximately 5,287 associates degrees were granted, almost a third of these from the St. Louis Community Colleges. As the largest Community college system in the state of Missourimarker, more than half of the households in St. Louis have at least one member who attended or attends the college. University of Missouri–St. Louismarker is the major comprehensive public university in Greater St. Louis and more than 20 percent of all St. Louis area residents with a bachelor degree attended UM-St. Louis. The region has a diverse range of institutions of higher learning including, the Jesuit Catholic university Saint Louis Universitymarker which is the oldest university west of the Mississippi.

Webster Universitymarker (the largest institution, by enrollment, of higher learning in the region), Maryville Universitymarker, Fontbonne Universitymarker, the Kenrick-Glennon Seminary (Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. Louis), Aquinas Institute of Theologymarker (a Dominican seminary and graduate school), Concordia Seminarymarker (the largest American seminary for the Lutheran Church), Covenant Theological Seminarymarker (a seminary for the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), and Missouri Baptist University, a small Christian college, Harris-Stowe State University, the city's only historically black college, and one of four in the Midwest.

Logan College of Chiropractic is located in Chesterfield and is one of the top Chiropractic colleges in the nation is known for graduating Chiropractic Physicians and researchers.
