Green Lane railway station serves the town of Birkenheadmarker, Wirral, Englandmarker, located in the south of the town. It is situated on the Chestermarker and Ellesmere Portmarker branches of the Wirral Line, part of the Merseyrail network.

History

The station was opened in 1886 as the terminus of the Mersey Railway's line from Liverpoolmarker via the Mersey Railway Tunnel. In 1891 the line was extended southwards to Rock Ferrymarker, and was subsequently electrified in 1903. It became part of the British Rail's Merseyrail network in the 1970s. Further electrification in the 1980s and 1990s allowed train services to be extended beyond Rock Ferry; first to Hootonmarker in 1985, then to Chestermarker in 1993 and finally Ellesmere Portmarker in 1994.

Services

Trains operate every 15 minutes (all day, every day) in each direction. Northbound trains operate via Hamilton Squaremarker station and the Mersey Railway Tunnel to Liverpool. Southbound trains continue to Hootonmarker, from where trains continue every 30 minutes to each of Chestermarker and Ellesmere Portmarker.
