The term Historic Compromise (Italian:"compromesso storico") most commonly refers to the accommodation between the Italianmarker Christian Democrats (DC) and the Italian Communist Party (PCI) in the 1970s, after the latter embraced eurocommunism under Enrico Berlinguer. The 1978 assassination of DC leader Aldo Moro put an end to it.

Norberto Bobbio was a prominent intellectual supporter of the compromise.

Since the middle of the 1990s until 2008, most communists and former-communists, many socialists and many former members of the DC co-operated in the coalitions "The Olive Tree" and its successor "The Union".

In October 2007, centrist party The Daisy (heir to Italian People's Party, a direct descendent from Christian Democracy) and social democratic Democrats of the Left (descended from the Democratic Party of the Left, formerly part of PCI) merged to form Democratic Party (PD). The Democratic Party considers itself the continuation of what Moro preached thirty years before but Cold War politics had prohibited. In the 2008 national election, however, the PD refused to form an alliance with the minor left-wing parties (now allied together as The Left – The Rainbow) and with the Catholic Union of Christian and Centre Democrats, thus failing the goal of keeping left-wing and centrists united.
