American Football World Cup (also known as the IFAF World Cup and Gridiron World Cup) is an international competition held every four years since 1999 to decide the world champion of American football. Italymarker hosted the 1999 Cup and Germanymarker hosted the 2003 Cup. Japanmarker won both titles. The United Statesmarker did not compete in the first two World Cups. The competition is run by the IFAF and it consists of a qualification round and a final tournament. In 2007, the 3rd American Football World Cup took place in Kawasaki, Japanmarker. In 2007, the total number of teams in the competition exceeded 20 countries as, besides the six nations that qualified for the final tournament, five teams competed in direct qualification games. In Europe, the continental federation EFAF also used its European Championships as one qualifier. United States won the IFAF cup in 2007. Austria was awarded as host nation for the 2011 IFAF World Cup.
