IISER Thiruvananthapuram
(Indian
Institute of Science Education and Research, Thiruvananthapuram
) (IISER-TVM) is an educational institution established
by the Government of
Indiain 2008 based on the recommendation of Scientific
Advisory Council to the
Prime
Minister.The institute is an autonomous institution awarding
five year integrated
MS degree in
Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and inter-disciplinary
areas.There are also facilities for doing research in these areas
leading to the award of Ph D degree.
IISER-TVM
is currently located in the campus of the College of
Engineering, Trivandrum
. A site of 200 acres for establishing a
permanent campus has been identified at Vithura
, at the
foothills of the Ponmudi hills of the
western ghats, about 40 km from
Thiruvananthapuram.
There are
four other such institutes in India and they are located at
Kolkata
, Pune
, Mohali
and Bhopal
.
Administration
The instituted is administered by a Board of Governors withM R S
Rao, President, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific
Research, Bangalore, as Chairman and Prof E D Jemmis as
Director.
Admissions
For admission to the MS programmes, students must have successfully
completed the 10+2 course. Admissions are based on the ranks
obtained in
IIT-JEE and performance in
KVPY.
The MS course is research oriented with a focus on basic sciences.
The various components of the course are designed in such away that
a graduate of the institute is motivated to take up science as a
career. However the diverse skills gained from the institute will
equip the students to pursue careers in any field including
industry.
