Jeffrey ("Jeff") Norman
Rouse (born December 6, 1970 in Fredericksburg, Virginia
) is an Olympic Gold Medalist and former World
Record Holder in swimming from the
United
States
. His best event was the 100 backstroke,
where he was ranked #1 in the world for eight consecutive years and
held the
World Record
from 1991 until 1999.
At the
1996 Summer Olympics in
Atlanta,
Georgia
, he won the gold medal in the
100m backstroke. He was also a member of the winning USA
relay team in the
400m Medley Relay.
Prior to the 1996 Olympics, he was second in the
100m backstroke at 1992 Summer Olympics; where he also set the
World Record in the 100m back, leading off the men's
400m Medley Relay.
He also
won the 100 back at the 1991 World Championships
in Perth, Western
Australia
.
He was inducted in the
International Swimming Hall
of Fame in 2001.
In college, he swam for, and attended,
Stanford
University
