John Paul Alessio (born July 5, 1979) is a Canadianmarker mixed martial artist (MMA) who currently competes as a welterweight. Alessio has fought for many of the major MMA promotions, including WEC, UFC, PRIDE, KOTC, MFC and DREAM.

Early life and career

Alessio was born in Vancouvermarker, British Columbiamarker. He later moved to Duncan, on Vancouver Island, and rode freestyle BMX. When he was 19 years old, he decided to pursue fighting. While in Duncan, Alessio trained under Canadian legend Jason Heit in a backyard gym. Alessio then moved to Californiamarker, where he began training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at The Shark Tankmarker. At just 20 years of age, Alessio made his UFC debut against legendary fighter Pat Miletich. Alessio lost the fight with the more experienced Miletich, but his career moved forward. Alessio went on to fight in PRIDE, WEC, KOTC and the UFC again. Alessio signed a three-fight contract with EliteXC, but later fought in the MFC and DREAM after EliteXC folded. His next fight will be at MFC 22.

Personal life

Alessio used to ride biketrials and competed in the Canadian trials championships several years in a row. He eventually gave up riding in 1997 to start training for mixed martial arts.
