John C. White (1924 - 1995) was Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1978 to 1981. He helped the Democrats retain their Majority in the 1978 elections. The Republicans took control of the presidency and the senate in the 1980 elections, however the Democrats did retain their majority in the United States House of Representatives under the leadership of Tip O'Neill. John White was DNC chairman at a time when Democrats controlled the White Housemarker, the Senate, the House of Representatives and a majority of governorships.

John White was the son of a North Texas sharecropper who earned a degree from Texas Tech. He was elected the Texas Commissioner of Agriculture at age 24 and was reelected 13 times. White was a reconciling force in the Texas Democratic Party at a time when Texas was a single party state with a liberal and conservative wing. He was a trusted informal advisor to Presidents John F Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson on international agricultural issues.
