Congressman John Fogarty
John Edward Fogarty (March 23, 1913 – January 10, 1967) was a Congressman from Rhode Island for 26 years.

He was born in Providence, Rhode Islandmarker. His brother, Charles Fogarty, Sr., was a State Senator and Director of the Rhode Island Small Business Administration. His nephew, Charles J. Fogarty, was the Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Islandmarker, and a candidate for Governor in 2006.

He attended La Salle Academymarker and Providence Collegemarker, apprenticed as a bricklayer in 1930 and rose to become president of Bricklayers Union No. 1 of Rhode Island.

He was elected as a Democrat in 1940, and served until his resignation on December 7, 1944, to enlist in the United States Navy. He was reelected in 1944, and served until his death at age 53 in Washington, D.C.marker on January 10, 1967; he was interred in St. Ann’s Cemetery, in Cranstonmarker.

The John Fogarty Memorial Hospital now the RI Rehabilitation Hospital in Woonsocket, Rhode Islandmarker is named after him, as well as the John E. Fogarty International Center for Advanced Study in the Health Sciences at the National Institutes of Healthmarker in Bethesda, Marylandmarker.
