John Marshall Metropolitan High
School, commonly known as Marshall, is a
public high school in Chicago
, Illinois
.
It serves
the students of the East Garfield Park
, West Garfield Park
, South Lawndale
and Humboldt Park
neighborhoods. The student body is
approximately 99%
African
American.
Under coach Dorothy Gaters, Marshall has won eight state
championships in girls' basketball. They won their most recent
championship in 2008 after defeating
Freeport High School.
The school's men's basketball team figures prominently in the 1994
documentary film Hoop Dreams.
