Jonestown is a city in Travis Countymarker, Texasmarker, United Statesmarker. The population was 1,681 at the 2000 census.


Jonestown is located at (30.488872, -97.924208). This is at the north end of Lake Travismarker, 19 miles (31 km) northwest of Austinmarker.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), of which, 4.7 square miles (12.1 km2) of it is land and 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2) of it (11.34%) is water.


As of the census of 2000, there were 1,681 people, 699 households, and 434 families residing in the city. The population density was 358.0 people per square mile (138.4/km2). There were 770 housing units at an average density of 164.0/sq mi (63.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.27% White, 0.83% African American, 0.42% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 3.57% from other races, and 2.50% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.58% of the population.

There were 699 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.9% were married couples living together, 9.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.8% were non-families. 29.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.98.

In the city the population was spread out with 24.3% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 34.1% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 8.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 110.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 108.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $43,167, and the median income for a family was $47,708. Males had a median income of $31,888 versus $26,797 for females. The per capita income for the city was $21,256. About 3.1% of families and 6.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.3% of those under age 18 and 0.9% of those age 65 or over.

Social Services

The Jonestown Plaza is central to local social services. 2 day old assorted breads, pastries, and cakes are available most of the time in the Nutrition Center. New in 2007 is a comprehensive medical center approximately 5 miles east on FM1431 with a 150 bed hospital and advanced services. Minimum quality medical service is sometimes available at the MAP Clinic in the back of the plaza. The Jonestown Public Library provides a means for locals who cannot afford a computer or internet connection to access valuable high tech resources.As of Spring 2008, FM 1431 is under major reengineering to straightening and widen the highway to support rapid growth on the north side of FM 1431.

Parks & Recreation

There are several parks in the area and plenty of untamed forests to hike around in. Almost every valley and creek in Jonestown is managed by the Lower Colorado River Authority, which means you can hike on it freely as public land. Jones Brother's Park is a huge waterfront public area on Lake Travis featuring 2 boat ramps, a playground, several Great Texas Oaks, a basketball court, a large open field ideal for playing Frisbee or flying a kite, and an array of shaded picnic areas. Pecan Bottom Park was officially turned into a public park after locals constantly maintained a rock damn in Sandy Creek.

Although there were 3 in the 1990's, Jonestown currently has no open public pools as all of them have been filled in and turned into gardens.


The City of Jonestown is served by the Leander and Lago Vista Independent School Districts.


Jonestown is both well known for annual festivities as well as crime and drug problems.

In 2007, mass murderer Paul Devoe began a killing spree that started with the murder of 4 people in Jonestown and ended in New Yorkmarker. Also, the city has been known for having a plethora of meth labs in its vast forests.

Jonestown is also well known for it's annual events and competitions. These include the KLBJ-FM Fishing Tournament, Texas Chili Cook-off, and the city-wide Easter Egg Hunt at Jones Brothers Park, as well as many other events.
