Joshua (Josh) Malik Childress (born June 20, 1983 in Harbor Citymarker, Californiamarker) is an Americanmarker professional basketball player. He currently plays with the pro club Olympiacos Piraeus in the Greek League and the Euroleague.

Amateur career

Childress attended Mayfair High Schoolmarker in Lakewood, Californiamarker. Besides basketball, he also played volleyball during his senior year, and led the Monsoons to an undefeated record. He then played three seasons at Stanford, where he was an AP 1st-Team All American and the Pac 10 player of the year as a junior in 2004. He declared for the 2004 NBA draft and was a first-round pick, number six overall, the highest a Stanford player has ever been drafted.

Pro career

NBA

During the 2004-05 NBA season Childress emerged as one of two promising rookie talents for the Atlanta Hawks, along with Josh Smith; the two showed improved play, minutes, and production. Childress ranked third among rookies in double-doubles in the 2004-05 season, behind only Emeka Okafor and Dwight Howard.

Greece

On July 23,2008, Josh Childress accepted and signed an unprecedented 3 year $20 million net income contract with the Euroleague club Olympiacos Piraeus. The contract was equal to and worth the same as a 3 year $32.5 million NBA contract, meaning Childress would make the same as a $10.833 million per year NBA salary. The contract included opt-out options after each of the first two seasons.

Childress also received a Greek Nike shoe contract after signing with Olympiacos Piraeus, a Nike sponsorship club. He had been offered a 5 year $33 million gross income deal by the Atlanta Hawks, but he turned it down because it was significantly less money than Olympiacos offered him. Childress averaged 8.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.1 steals per game during the Euroleague 2008-09 season.
