History

The station was the first television station to operate in Rochester and the third station in the state after KSTP-TVmarker and WTCN-TVmarker, coming online in 1953 with the callsign KROC-TV.

The station was launched by G. David Gentling, the son of KROC Radio owner Gregory P. Gentling. As KROC, the station carried programming from all four commercial networks of the 1950s: ABC, CBS, NBC, and DuMont [67925]. The family operation eventually became the Southern Minnesota Broadcasting Company, though the TV station was sold to Quincy Newspapers, Inc. in 1976 and changed its name.
