The Laurentian Abyss is an underwater depression off the eastern coast of Canadamarker in the Atlantic Oceanmarker. Not a trench, but more of an "underwater valley", it is estimated to be at most ~6,000 meters in depth. The Laurentian Abyss is a product of glaciation and water currents from the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

The trench is populated by hydrothermal vents with their own ecosystems independent of sunlight.

In popular culture

The Laurentian Abyss has been a feature of at least three pieces of fiction media.

  • In the 2007 film Transformers, the remains of Megatron, Blackout, Brawl and the other defeated Decepticons are dropped into the abyss. It is theorized that the pressure and extremely low temperatures at this depth would crush and bury the evil alien robots. However, the film erroneously states that the abyss is the deepest point on Earth; the actual deepest point is the Challenger Deepmarker, a section of the Mariana Trenchmarker in the Pacific Oceanmarker.

  • In the 2009 film Transformers Revenge of the Fallen, the remains of Megatron and the other decepticon remains are found at the bottom of the Abyss, by his Decepticon comrades and then he is reactivated. Ravage is also seen jumping out of the Abyss and The Decepticon Protoforms and The Fallen are seen climbing up a sinking destroyed ship that is about to sink into the Abyss waters.
