The title of Latin Emperor were held by those individuals who held power in the city of Constantinople after the Fourth Crusade and before the Reconquest of Constantinople. These individual claim to be the rightful heirs of the Eastern Roman Empire in opposition to the Emperor of Nicaea, the Emperor of Trebizond and the Despot of Epirus, the rightful heirs of the Byzantine Empire. Out of these three the Nicaean Emperor displaced the Latin Emperors in 1261. The Latin Emperors were also known as the Emperor of Romania, not to confused with modern Romaniamarker.
